Bloom

The opening of the exhibition “Bloom “by the artist Sorin Scurtulescu took place at the contemporary art gallery META Spațiu in Timișoara on Thursday, November 7.

In “Bloom”, curated by Mirela Vlăduți, two worlds collide and, in their synergy, result in this magnificent exhibition. Vlăduți’s minimalism, her special way of hanging, gives the lush, blooming, radiant paintings space to breathe and take effect. The paintings invite us to come to the meadow, they seduce us and manipulate our mood. Entering Meta Spațiu’s rooms, the minimalism of the display is immediately noticeable. An airy cheerfulness has filled the exhibition.

In the first room, two monochrome paintings immediately catch the eye, one white and one black. On closer inspection, the small squares that have been filled in become visible, breaking up the uniform surface and causing it to disintegrate. These two paintings stand in complete contrast to Scurtulescu’s flower paintings. Monochrome claims to depict the world without the distraction of color. By choosing the colors white, pure light, and black, the absence of light, the entire color palette is described. In many cultures, these two colors are associated with rituals of life and death. We also rediscovered this symbiosis in the flower paintings. By capturing the color on canvas, natural decay is halted. The momentary state is captured for eternity.

The two drawings near the doorway are geometric analyses of petals in the style of Constantin Flondor. The flower is deconstructed, depicted in its basic forms. One of the two drawings is reminiscent of recorded dance steps. The movement of the plants in the wind is captured on paper. A method of capturing movement on paper already used by his role models such as Constantin Flondor, Stefan Bartalan, Dort Tulcan and others. Flondor, who anticipated so many trends in contemporary art between the 1960s and 1980s with his group projects 1+1+1, Sigma and Prologue, never renounced painting and drawing, although new media opened up unimagined possibilities. For me, contemporary art is characterized by the combination and use of diversity.

In the 2nd room is a wall-filling painting of an early summer flower meadow with lilies. A wall-filling painting of an early summer flower meadow with lilies. A chain of associations is immediately set in motion, from Vincent Van Gogh to Claude Monet to plein air painting. The warm light literally streams into the room and casts a spell over the viewer. Sorin Scurtulescu has applied the paint impasto using a palette knife technique; close up, the subject breaks up into small color fields, the original form of pixels. In the tradition of plein air painters, Scurtulescu often takes his easel into nature, the outdoors, to paint his pictures. Sorin Scurtulescu loves the abundance of matter, painting is a way of life for him, the pictures literally pour out of him.

I have been observing him for 10 years. The second time I met him, he and his friends Ciprian Bodea, Cosmin Fruntes and Andrei Rosetti (NOIMA) were painting in the snow in front of the 12-14 contemporary on the street in Vienna. I will never forget this picture, because this kind of artist had disappeared from the scene in recent decades. The hedonistic joie de vivre as an artist – now just a cliché, artists in the precariat have little time for it.

The show is a reference to nature, the status artist and the great master of contemporary art and teacher of Scurtulescu, a combination of different phases of visual art yesterday and today, with references to various styles and icons.
